Beautiful Location
The Pear Tree at Purton is now officially the greenest hotel in the area having received in 2007 a Silver Award under the Green Tourism Scheme, regained in 2009 and 2011. It covers all areas of greenness and sustainability and amongst the 200+ criteria are:
Buying local produce ( We have the Wiltshire Breakfast award for the amount of fresh Breakfast items which are sourced from within the County)
A commitment to fair-trade products
A commitment to the environment - on site wetlands, wild flower meadows and ponds. We have recently planted hundreds of indigenous wild flowers and trees and we monitor and record visiting fauna.
We also closely monitor waste, energy usage and water consumption.
The Natural Environment
In line with our commitment to greenness, over the past few years we have developed a two and a half acre of natural environment. This currently comprises a wetland, wild flower meadow, a copse which includes three indigenous oaks, a 600 vine vineyard and three bee hives. Currently one bee hive has gone away to be sanitised, returning next week with a new queen. We have high hopes of her next year. This year has been amazing for our own honey, much more than we expected, so we are able to sell some at reception, as well as provide for breakfast every day. As things develop and progress in this area we will keep you informed in this section of the website.
